Variable Hero[]
The setup for the third backline hero depends on whether the player prefers to play with a dual Restoration Magic backline or one Resto and one Prot. It also depends on the player setup (melee or caster damage dealer) and whether or not the player has access to Zei Ri or a Mercenary Hero.
Spiteful Spirit[]
Curses is preferred in scenarios in which the player is expected to tank a large mob and quickly kill with AoE. This is often the case with aggressive playstyles or when frequently employing tactics such as cornerblocking:

Walkthrough[]
1. Opening Gates[]
Flag your heroes to P1 and P2, walk through P3 and cancel flags. On some occasions the area effect will make your team overcast. Simply resign and reenter the mission. Use knockdown on Kanaxai. After clearing the small chamber. Use sprint and armor boost to pull the rotating mob to your gate. After wiping the Ripper Carps be sure to kill the Reborn Irukandji’s to avoid spawning resurrection spirits.
2. Upper Gate Area[]
- Option One: When approaching the upper gate activate Recall on your ST rit. Wait for the center group to start approaching towards you to get close enough to pull all three groups. Cancel recall at the very last minute and allow minions to push front blocking Leviathan Arm's.
- Option Two: With your heroes, enter the upper gate on the left side and work your way clockwise. Avoid pulling all three groups at once (Recall is not needed if you decide this option).
3. Recall Pads (Gate Trick)[]
Push your minions against the gate to kill the Outcast group on the other side. Once the area is cleared, apply recall on ST, then apply recall on your Mesmer’s heroes while targeting yourself. Press the F key to target yourself. Flag the entire group near the right wall on the other side of the gate.
You’ll want to set an in-game hotkey to clear party commands. To do so go to 'Settings > Control > Action: Clear Party Commands. Setting this to the period symbol is ideal for pressing the forward arrow after hitting recall. Place your heroes with recall on each pad and you (the player) on the middle pad closest to the gate. Deactivate recall on yourself, press the hotkey to clear party commands, and deactivate recall on your four heroes quickly. If you are lucky, sometimes one or two heroes deactivate automatically and appear next to you on the other side of the gate.
4. Outcast Chamber[]
If you are tanking be sure to take damage from the Mesmer Outcasts before flagging your heroes in to kill each group. There are four groups. Two on each hill and two in the center. Try not to pull more than one group at a time. If you have cons now is a good time to use them. Kill the center group closest to you first. Make your way to the right side and clear the first hill. Your minions may pull center group at this point. Kill that group next. Finally kill the left hill and proceed.
5. Outcast Archers[]
Flag your heroes behind the gate and make your way underneath the first hill the archers won’t be able to strike you with arrow. Pull the first group with a long bow. Try not to die when pulling the groups back to the gate. Repeat until the drifter groups are dead. Use Fall Back! and make your way to the next area.
6. Oni Spawns[]
Flag your heroes a ¼ of the way down the first steps and wait for Oni to spawn. Make your way to the center where the worm breaks the ice. Kill the worm for a 500 faction bonus (You can kill other Kanaxai if you are faction farming). Two other Oni groups will spawn near the warm.
7. The Quarry[]
This part is challenging. Be sure to pull the Oni in groups ignoring the first Outcast group below. When you find a clearing, activate recall on ST and flag them ¼ of the way down the stairs. Sprint past the first Outcast group to spawn the Oni message and cancel recall. More Oni groups will begin circling the area. Once the remaining Oni groups are dead, make your way through the remaining Outcast groups by charging Ineptitude → Energy Surge → Panic → Splinter Weapon on each Outcast group.
8. Bridges[]
Faster is better in this area. Make your way to the first bridge without wiping your team’s health. Spawn the first Oni group and pull them to the center of the bridge. The shadows will begin spawning behind you. You may have time to move to the next bridge before they are at your back. At the second bridge you can either decide to kill the spawning groups behind you or speed up the process and continue to the last bridge (Use your best player judgement). Try not to get stuck between both groups at once. The last Oni spawn is finicky. You will have to flag your heroes near the end of the bridge.
9. Shadow Realm[]
At the next gate flag your heroes to the right and begin pulling small Shadow groups with a long bow. You can either vanquish the area or kill enough to create an opening to sprint your team through to the next area.
10. Condition Cave[]
In the next realm be sure to move slowly spawning Oni groups while deactivating flower traps. Hug the left side and take one group at a time careful not to pull both Outcast and Oni groups at once. Travel through the narrow cave killing shadow spawns and last Outcast group. If you made it this far, congratulations you’re almost done!
11. Kanaxai Lair[]
There are two shadow groups you need to spawn before attacking Kanaxai as a group. Apply Recall on your ST have them stand on the small rocks as soon as you enter the lair. Apply your sprint and head left to the far wall. Kanaxai will start running toward you. Cast any armor skill you have and knock him down. The shadows will spawn. At this point you can cancel Recall before dying.
Move your hero team to the right side just before Kanaxai will want to run up. Perform the same action and head towards the back wall. Your Recall may not reach as far as you wish. This is okay. Recast and spawn the shadows as far as possible. Now inch forward with your group until Kanaxai is agroed. Knock him down repeatedly until he is dead.
